When Silverthorne resident Red Gerard took home the first Olympic gold medal for the U.S. at the 2018 Winter Olympics, at just 17 years old, the town gave itself a new moniker: Goldthorne and celebrated local Olympians and Paralympians including: Chris Corning, Red Gerard, Kyle Mack, Amy Purdy and Jimmy Sides.
On Friday, as the spotlight turns to Beijing during the Opening Ceremony for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the time has come again for Silverthorne to bask in its Olympic pride as hometown athletes Red Gerard and Chris Corning compete in the men’s big air and slopestyle snowboarding events. Fingers crossed that we’ll get a repeat opportunity to once again change the town’s sign to “Gold.”
GETTING OUT THERE
With its abundant opportunities for outdoor winter adventure, Silverthorne is a natural epicenter for world-class athleticism. But you don’t need Olympic aspirations to take advantage of the local recreation.
From family-friendly experiences to adventure-filled excursions, Silverthorne is the perfect destination for winter exploring, Olympic style. In addition to downhill skiing and snowboarding at one of the five easily accessible world class ski resorts within Summit County, consider giving one of these adventures a go as the snow continues to blanket our winter wonderland:
- Let figure skaters (or speed skaters!) inspire you to try ice skating at North Pond Park.
- Whether skeleton, bobsled or luge is your sport, bring your best moves to the sledding hills at Maryland Creek Park and Rainbow Park, offering options for mellow, novice sledders and speedsters alike.
- Calling all nordic fans! Groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails at Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks offer options for all experience levels. For scenic tours, beginner nordic skiers or snowshoers can also try Acorn Creek, Lily Pad Lake and the Salt Lick Trail system, while those with more experience will enjoy Willow Creek, Rock Creek or Angler Mountain Trail.
- Ice climbing isn’t an Olympic sport, but shouldn’t it be? Guided ice climbing and backcountry skiing/snowboarding tours offered by Colorado Adventure Guides are a great way for all skill levels to participate safely in these activities.
